<p>The new <a href="/desktop/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MapTiler Desktop</a> 11.3 release is now available for you to download, and it brings some sweet new features! Now you can change the <strong>basemap</strong> when you are previewing your input files as well as the final rendered map. We have also introduced a new “<strong>Global settings</strong>” window, that brings back the ability to adjust the advanced rendering options and adds some new ones. Among many other improvements, the new release of MapTiler Desktop brings you a redesigned <strong>inspect mode </strong>for vector maps.</p><h2>Changing the basemap</h2><p>In <strong>MapTiler Desktop 11.3</strong>, we’ve extended the “<strong>Change basemap</strong>” functionality to the input preview page. This means you can customize the look not only for the rendered tiles preview at the end but also see how your map will look from the start. There is a basic set of default basemaps available in MapTiler Desktop, but you’re not limited just to them. <p>The brand new MapTiler Desktop 11.2 arrived with estimation of rendering time, new default output format, KML for Google Earth, upload to cloud service of your choice, and many other improvements.&nbsp;</p><h2>Estimation of rendering time</h2><p>Before you start rendering, MapTiler Desktop newly shows an estimation of how long the processes will take. Simply by looking at the numbers and comparing them with the size of your dataset, you can tell if you didn’t make any mistake in the settings - like adding too many zoom levels.</p><p>This also helps to plan your work more efficiently - you can run the processing during the night or start working on another project while your data is being turned into map tiles.</p><h2>GeoPackage - new default output format</h2><p>We believe the best format for publishing geodata on the web and for use in desktop GIS software is currently GeoPackage. Therefore we picked it as the default output format while we preserved the options of rendering into MBTiles and Folder structure for those who are interested.</p><p>The big advantage of GeoPackage is an easy upload to MapTiler Cloud. KML, which stands for Keyhole Markup Language, is widely used in the Google Earth application.</p><p>You can overlay your image into the entire planet or just a small area. If the extension is associated with MapTiler Desktop, it directly opens the preview mode where you can see your map, zoom in and out, or view a footprint of your file on top of a basemap.You can view tiled MBTiles and GeoPackages, but also browse through files which are not (yet) tiled like TIFF, PDF, JPEG, PNG, and even more exotic file formats like MrSID, ECW, JPEG2000, and others. The PRO edition can display footprints of multiple files composing a mosaic and one by one, you can view the content of each file.</p><p>The viewer shows you also things which are stored in the headers like EPSG code, resolution in pixels, and geolocation information (if they are present). After viewing your files, you can optionally continue with processing.</p><h2>Wizard for generating map tiles</h2><p>The UX changes followed one goal: to make data processing even easier. The fastest way to get a fully styled map with own colors and icons, which is optionally combined with a base map, we recommend uploading processed data into MapTiler Cloud. For the upcoming version, we are asking you, the community of users, to give us your feedback.</p><h2>The vision</h2><p>Since the very beginning, MapTiler Desktop was created to help turn files into zoomable maps. <p>If you decide to build a map platform on cloud storage like Amazon S3, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure or any other alternative cloud or on-premise OpenStack, you need to populate it with content. But official applications are often heavy-footed while the alternatives lack the speed. Our CloudPush technology solves both issues and offers manipulation with files that are both fast and extremely easy-to-use.&nbsp;</p><h2>CloudPush for simple upload to a cloud&nbsp;services</h2><p>Serverless hosting has gained popularity due to easy scalability when the project starts to grow, overall better performance, lower price compared to self-hosting and easier disaster recovery if the provider spreads its’ infrastructure all over the globe. However, manipulation with files on the cloud is painful.</p><p style="margin-left:40px;">The speed is maximized thanks to parallel connections.</p><p>We made it with CloudPush as simple as possible: you just insert credentials and specify the target where you want to upload your map. Currently, we support uploading in the MBTiles format to Google Cloud Platform, Amazon S3 storage, Microsoft Azure and our own <a href="/cloud/">MapTiler Cloud</a>. CloudPush technology offers manipulation with files on cloud services that are both fast and extremely easy-to-use.

<p>Generating maps from PDFs or GeoPDFs was significantly improved and support for the RD New tile grid has been added in the new MapTiler Desktop 10.3.</p><h2>Faster PDF or GeoPDF processing</h2><p>Quicker and much more beautiful maps will get users who are generating maps of venues, floor plans or blueprints in the PDF format. MapTiler Desktop 10.3 significantly improve rendering maps from PDFs or GeoPDFs and adds support for the Dutch RD New Tile Grid.

<p>Generating maps in any geographic coordinate system in GeoPackage format and direct upload to MapTiler Cloud is now possible with MapTiler Desktop 10.2.&nbsp;</p><h2>Create a map in a custom grid and upload it as GeoPackage into MapTiler&nbsp;Cloud</h2><p>Generating a map in OGC GeoPackage format in local coordinate systems is possible since <a href="/blog/2017/07/geopackage-in-maptiler-80.html">MapTiler Desktop 8.0</a>. The new release allows <strong>direct upload to our MapTiler Cloud in GeoPackage format with any tile grid</strong>. <a href="/blog/2019/10/maptiler-maps-api-hosting-for-geopackage.html">Read more about hosting maps in any coordinate system</a>.</p><p>Currently, only raster tiles in GeoPackage are supported. <p>To save your time, disk storage and internet connection, we prepared the automated update system. A single script brings you regular weekly updates of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://openmaptiles.com/downloads/dataset/osm/#0.23/0/-26">OpenStreetMap vector tiles</a>.</p><h2>1/3 of the size for a single&nbsp;update</h2><p>Previously, making an update meant downloading the whole 60 GB file. With the automatic updates script, you have to download just the difference, where the size is about 20 GB, which is only one-third of the size.&nbsp;</p><p>After download, the script, which is a collection of console-based commands in a single binary file, merges differences and creates a new planet MBTiles file. It means if you made your download four weeks ago and no updates afterward, it would last four times longer to get the latest planet.</p><p>To have always the freshest map, set up this script to run as a service each week on Wednesday noon when we usually release the new planet.</p><p>You can also subscribe with your email to receive notifications when the new planet is available and set up a custom trigger to start the update process when you receive the email.&nbsp;</p>

We prepared an automated update system that brings you regular weekly updates of maps from the OpenStreetMap vector tiles.

<p>The new release of OpenMapTiles comes with many smaller changes. Version 3.9 brings rendering of docks and piers, support for multilingual street names and other improvements.&nbsp;</p><h2>Docks and&nbsp;Piers</h2><p>The biggest visual change is the newly added support for rendering docks and piers. Piers are now rendered in a similar way like bridges while docks were added to the water layer. It follows all other map elements like place names, country names or named points of interest. Street name labels are now rendered in all 58 languages and the selection of displayed language is done automatically based on end-user preferences or by an app developer decision.</p><p>Many changes for multilingual street names has been made by the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://github.com/HSLdevcom">Helsinki Regional Transport Authority</a>. They use our maps on their websites, in the application as well as printed on the public transport stops. The new version of the open-source OpenMapTiles project adds support for docks, piers, and multilingual street names.

<p>MapTiler Desktop 10.0 is released and the biggest news is the support of vector tiles. You can now use vectors in input as well as in output format.</p><h2>Create Vector Tiles on&nbsp;Desktop</h2><p>Generating of vector tiles is <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://support.maptiler.com/i237-simple-vector-tiles-generating">extremely easy</a> on all platforms, including Windows: you just drag and drop your vector data (in GeoJSON, Shapefile, PBF, GPX, KML or any other vector format), select attributes in each layer which you want to render, set zoom levels and choose the output format.</p><p>MapTiler Desktop 10 supports generating vector tiles into <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://support.maptiler.com/i36-folder-vs-mbtiles-vs-geopackage">Folder or MBTiles</a> format as well as direct upload to Cloud services or mobile devices.</p><p>When the rendering process is done, you can quickly display the tiles in MapTiler Desktop using built-in inspect mode. MapTiler Desktop 10 can now render vector data into map tiles.

<p>Let’s say you have a collection of images you want to turn into a zoomable map. This also means you want to give them a unified look. Before MapTiler Desktop 9, there was a need to make a color correction in a specialized tool. Now, you can do it directly before rendering your final map, for a batch of images and, most important, automatically from a reference image.</p><h2>Automatic color correction</h2><p>This new function can be entered by clicking on “Color correct” button in the screen following georeferencing and preceding rendering output selection. &nbsp;</p><p>The function’s screen is divided into two sectors: the left part shows the processed image, on the right side are located color correction tools and in case you decide for the automatic color correction, there is in the top right corner the zoomable reference image.</p><p>For automatic color correction, add a new image as a reference by clicking on “Open new reference image”. This can be repeated with more pictures until you are satisfied with the look. By clicking on “Select reference image”, you can switch between the already loaded reference and processed images.</p><p>If you are pleased with the output, just click on “Save color corrections” and continue with rendering. Closing without saving is also possible. If you are not 100% happy with the outcome, you can manually change specific values.</p><h2>Fine-tune your image with manual correction</h2><p>Automatic color correction can do a magic to convert your map image to something close to the ideal model. However, sometimes small manual corrections need to be done to finalize your desired look.</p><p>Next to the “Auto” function, there are settings for “Contrast”, “Gamma” and “Saturation”. Each of them contains sliders and input field. There are either default values or values set by automatic color correction.&nbsp;</p><p>Each value can be changed by sliding or changing the value in the input field, the result of this operation is immediately visible on the processed image. Don’t be afraid to play around with the values a bit, because resetting to default without quality loss is always possible by clicking on “Reset default values” or by repeating reference image selection.</p><h2>What else brings MapTiler&nbsp;Desktop 9?</h2><p>The Color correction function is the shiniest news in MapTiler Desktop 9, but other improvements were done as well:</p><ul><li>Next to Baidu and Global Geodetic (WGS84) presets, there have been few others added: S-JTSK / Krovak which is widely used in Czechia and Slovakia, Yandex used in Russia, NZGD2000 for New Zealand, OSGB1936 for the United Kingdom and CH1903 for Switzerland.</li><li>New tiling scheme for Folder output render option — ZYX with URL format: {z}/{y}/{x}.png.</li><li>Generates Leaflet example for other than Mercator tiling grids.</li></ul><p>The updated version is now available at <a href="/desktop/">www.maptiler.com</a>. <a href="/download/">Try it out for free now</a>!&nbsp;</p>

 MapTiler Desktop 9 brings automatic color corrections and other improvements. 

<p>Working with a huge amount of geographic data is not an easy task. We decided to split the job with cluster technology. By using Docker, we were able to process petabytes of data or serve self-hosted world maps in 10 minutes. Our solution, based on Docker technology, made it to the DockerCon conference.&nbsp;</p><h2>Self-hosted world&nbsp;maps</h2><p>When a company is considering using a map, the first option taken into consideration is mostly one of the big free map providers. This is what most people know and what they consider as free: in fact, it is always paid — either by the user’s personal data or, when it comes to extensive usage by an organization, by a significant amount of money. They are billed for using maps offline, behind the firewall, asset tracking, or simply if the number of visitors jumped higher. All those limitations can be avoided with self-hosted maps.</p><p>In OpenMapTiles, we offer you world maps based on OpenStreetMap. This collaborative mapping project includes all important infrastructure for a base map like streets, houses, roads, landuse data, points of interest, and much more. On top of this, the paid customers also get access to digital elevation model and contour lines for building outdoor maps and satellite imagery of the whole world. You can also add your own geodata and use the same map style to customize its look.</p><p><a href="https://openmaptiles.com/server/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">OpenMapTiles Server</a>, which enables you to run all of this from your own infrastructure, is using Docker container technology. The hardware requirements are so low that you can run it even on your laptop. There is also no need to be connected to the internet, therefore the maps can be used offline or behind the firewall. You will be guided through the short wizard, where you select if you want to serve the whole planet, a country, or a city, which of the prepared map styles you want to use or if you want to use your own default language for the visitors, what kind of services you want to run (raster tiles, vector tiles, WMTS, WMS or static maps).</p><p>As said before, the hardware requirements are really low: pre-generated vector tiles of the whole world have just some 50 GB. Therefore, the minimal requirement is set to 60 GB hard drive space and 8 GB RAM. If you want to have raster tiles, you will need more space, as raster images occupy more space. Serving pre-rendered tiles has an advantage in terms of lower hardware requirements compared to serving tiles on demand, where you need to run your own PostgreSQL, Nginx, and others. Also, the configuration is significantly easier, and setting up the server is a task that requires a person with basic IT knowledge.</p><p style="margin-left:40px;">Map of the entire world can run on a computer with 60 GB hard drive space and 8 GB&nbsp;RAM.</p><p>The solution based on the OpenMapTiles Server is fully scalable (horizontally + vertically); the scaling could be done dynamically based on the workload. Scaling requires Map Server, Memserver and volume attached, which enables multiplying the machines. You can achieve the same result using Swarm / Kubernetes.</p><figure class="media"><div data-oembed-url="https://vimeo.com/876427794?share=copy"><div style="position: relative; padding-bottom: 100%; height: 0; padding-bottom: 56.2493%;"><iframe src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/876427794?background=1" style="position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%; top: 0; left: 0;" frameborder="0" webkitallowfullscreen="" mozallowfullscreen="" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div></div></figure><p><br><i>Short graphical wizard where you select which services you want to&nbsp;run</i></p><h2>Processing geospatial Big Data on a Docker&nbsp;cluster</h2><p>The whole technique of processing big geodata can be split on a cluster using Docker container technology.</p><p>Our solution starts by dividing the whole work into smaller jobs and sending them to separate machines. Each of them is constantly reporting metrics and logs to the master server. Once the job is marked as done, finished work is sent to the output storage, and the control server sends another work, and the whole process starts again. The input and output storage can be anything from own server to cloud services like Amazon S3 or Google Cloud Storage.</p><p>With the process described above, we were able to render the whole world OpenStreetMap data with the OpenMapTiles project (126 million tiles) in one day using 32 machines, each equipped with 4 cores. This job will otherwise take ~128 days of CPU time. The same technique was used for rendering raster data using our <a href="/engine/">MapTiler Engine</a>. <p>Creating and publishing your own map service on the Internet is now very simple. Just process your image, upload the produced static files to a web hosting and open the map as an interactive layer in QGIS or other GIS software.</p><h3>Advantages of WMTS&nbsp;service</h3><p>WMTS, which stands for Web Map Tile Service, is a newer and extended version of WMS (Web Map Service) protocol. It allows you to open an interactive map layer from a remote server. Instead of serving one image per request, WMTS serves tiles (mostly 256x256 pixel size). The main advantage is that tiles can be pre-rendered on the server side and easily cached, which both reduces waiting time.</p><h2>Prepare an image for a map&nbsp;service</h2><p>Loading some of the freely available WMTS in QGIS3 can be done in a few clicks, creating your own is evenly simple. On the beginning of the process, you have to have an image you want to work with. For those who just want to try it, we recommend using some of <a href="http://www.oldmapsonline.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">the old map images</a> of a place they know.</p><p>After you <a href="/download/">download</a>, install and run MapTiler Desktop software, load (or drag and drop) an image into the program, the graphical wizard will guide you through the whole process.</p><figure class="media"><div data-oembed-url="https://www.youtube.com/embed/o2ukdJ1ocbU?enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.maptiler.com"><div style="position: relative; padding-bottom: 100%; height: 0; padding-bottom: 56.2493%;"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/o2ukdJ1ocbU" style="position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%; top: 0; left: 0;" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div></div></figure><p>First, you will be asked to set the coordinate system. Unless you have a specific requirement, leave this field blank and click on Set button. In the next window, you have to georeference the image, which in other words means to say where exactly on the planet your image should be placed. Few georeferencing methods are available, however, the most common is the “Assign location visually (Georefrencer)” option. Here you pick at least three points from your image and match them with corresponding points on the map. For higher accuracy, you can match more spots. When your image perfectly fits the map, click on “Save” and select the output format for your work in next step.</p><p>For loading in QGIS as WMTS, select “Folder” option and click “Render”. You will be asked to select a folder for the output. When rendering is completed, you will find there all the files you need. That’s it, now you can start to use your work in QGIS.</i></p><h2>Upload to a web hosting or Amazon&nbsp;S3</h2><p>Creating your own WMTS service requires just uploading your work to the hosting. Drag the folder with all the files made by MapTiler Desktop, upload it to the web hosting (you can also use a free hosting: just make sure it is not adding advertisement into the content) using FTP client and open the URL in web browser. Now there is in the left menu, under “Desktop” link, available a step-by-step guide for loading your project in QGIS.</p><p>In the right panel, click on the WMTS link, which will open an XML file. Do not pay attention to the content, just copy the file’s URL. You can also serve tiles from a PHP hosting using <a href="/how-to/tileserver-php/">TileServer-PHP</a> or upload your map directly to <a href="/how-to/hosting-on-amazon-s3/">Amazon S3</a> server to use the power of the serverless solution.</p><h2>Open your WMTS in&nbsp;QGIS3</h2><p>In QGIS3, right click on the “WMS” option in the “Browser Panel”, select “New Connection…”, pick a name for your layer and paste the URL of the XML file you just copied in the browser. By clicking “Ok”, a new connection will be created. Unroll the WMS option and double click on your newly created layer. It will load into the “Layers Panel” and automatically activate in the main window. Now you can explore the layer or start using it for geospatial analysis.</p><blockquote><p>To improve the look of any WMS/WMTS in QGIS, just right click on the layer in “Layers panel”, select “Properties” and in “Styles” set the “Resampling” method for “out” to “Average”.</p></blockquote><p>Loading your WMTS in the QGIS2 is the same, the only change is a slightly different look of “Create a new WMS connection” window.<img src="https://media.maptiler.com/img/2018_03_01_map_service_for_qgis3_without_a_server_3_72afe9649a.jpg" alt="2018-03-01-map-service-for-qgis3-without-a-server-3.jpg" srcset="https://media.maptiler.com/img/thumbnail_2018_03_01_map_service_for_qgis3_without_a_server_3_72afe9649a.jpg 245w,https://media.maptiler.com/img/small_2018_03_01_map_service_for_qgis3_without_a_server_3_72afe9649a.jpg 500w,https://media.maptiler.com/img/medium_2018_03_01_map_service_for_qgis3_without_a_server_3_72afe9649a.jpg 750w,https://media.maptiler.com/img/large_2018_03_01_map_service_for_qgis3_without_a_server_3_72afe9649a.jpg 1000w," sizes="100vw" width="1000px"><i>When uploaded to a web hosting, your work can be served as WMTS service</i></p><h2>GeoPackage or MBTiles for local offline&nbsp;use</h2><p>Alternatively, you can render your map into GeoPackage or MBTiles format and open it directly in QGIS. This can be done by drag and drop the&nbsp;.gpkg or&nbsp;.mbtiles file in the main window or by clicking the “Add Raster File” button. This is especially useful if you want to work on one computer only and completely offline.</p><blockquote><p>Drag and drop the&nbsp;.gpkg or&nbsp;.mbtiles file into the main QGIS window to open the files&nbsp;locally.</p></blockquote><p>We have seen that creating your own WMTS service from an image is very simple. Very simple way of how to display map service in QGI3 without a map server.

<p>MapTiler Desktop 8.0 is here - and it can generate map tiles in OGC GeoPackage format. The standardized OGC GeoPackage can store the tiles in the most popular mercator profile as well as in the coordinate systems specific for your country. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>For the standard tile profile in Mercator - <strong>the generated GeoPackage file (.gpkg) is also compliant to MBTiles</strong> format in the same moment - which makes it very versatile and compatible with many viewers and software tools.</p><p>Our utility for direct fast uploading of the map tiles to the most popular cloud hostings (such as Google Cloud Storage or Amazon S3 buckets) now supports the GeoPackage format too - for all profiles generated by MapTiler Desktop. This means you can push any tiles to a reliable hosting which costs a few cents - and you get a web viewer and WMTS compatible with ArcGIS and QGIS. This including map tiles in a local coordinate system - and available for batch processing and automation as <code>cloudpush</code> command in the terminal.</p><p>It is possible to drop 16-bit raster input files into MapTiler Desktop - and they are automatically scaled into 8-bit RGBA output tiles - which eliminates the need for extra preprocessing in some cases.</p><p>MapTiler Desktop graphic interface now allows to visually pick a colour for transparency from the input file. <p>We carefully listen to our customers and there is a new MapTiler 7.2 update packed with many most wanted features!&nbsp;</p><p>Send your maps to a mobile phone or tablet and use it offline - directly from MapTiler user interface. The data transfer is done via Google Drive instead of Dropbox now.</p><p>Updated 7.2 version of MapTiler includes a&nbsp;<strong>Resume mode</strong>&nbsp;which means that your MapTiler will continue working where it was stopped. <h3>New georeferencing interface&nbsp;</h3><p>The visual georeferencing process was completely redesigned. Scanned maps and images missing geographical location can be positioned directly. There is a new Overlay option, where it is possible to toggle between the image and background map with a Shift button. Such hosting is a robust and affordable way to publish your maps online.</p><p>Maps rendered with MapTiler or available as MBTiles file are after upload available in various viewers, such as Leaflet, OpenLayers, WebGL Earth, Google Maps API, MapBox.js, etc.</p><p>Thanks to the OGC WMTS standard the maps can be also directly opened in QGIS or ArcGIS for Desktop. Compared to the standard S3 utilities, uploading of map tiles is a way faster, especially for larger maps. The workflow is as simple as few clicks.
