Switzerland 2075: Visualizing climate change

Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ), one of the most visited media sites in Switzerland, has produced a remarkable, immersive experience showing what the Swiss landscape could look like if climate change continues at the current rate. MapTiler played a pivotal role in the "Switzerland 2075" project by providing essential map tools and resources to create a dynamic, data-driven visualization to highlight real-world changes to the landscape.

As a technology partner, MapTiler enabled the integration of modified satellite imagery and geographic data to illustrate potential future environmental changes along the Aare River, from glacial retreats to forest health.

Collaboration with MapTiler

NZZ has produced a highly immersive visualization with Switzerland 2075, pushing themselves to learn new mapping skills. MapTiler Support was on hand whenever there was an issue, working with them to optimize the performance for as many devices as possible. Additional help was provided to get the right data and perfect the workflow between the various software packages and frameworks.

“MapTiler Support was invaluable for this project. They reacted quickly to our questions and consistently provided practical solutions.”

Complete Maps Platform

The NZZ visualization team used several key technologies from the MapTiler platform. Custom map tiles were developed in QGIS using the MapTiler Plugin and further refined in Photoshop. These were then processed in MapTiler Engine, the resulting compact file sizes made for smooth performance on various devices. Additionally, the MapTiler SDK facilitated seamless interaction and transitions, e.g. the fly-to" effect, while maintaining high-resolution visuals and optimal load times, which is crucial for engaging users in this immersive climate change narrative.

The results speak for themselves. Switzerland 2075 holds readers' attention from start to finish, making it one of NZZ’s best-performing climate change articles for this metric.

Find out how NZZ harnessed the MapTiler Platform in their "making of article".
