<p>MapTiler Ocean, the latest addition to <a href="/cloud/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MapTiler Cloud</a>, describes the world’s oceans in great detail and brings new possibilities for marine cartography. Containing detailed bathymetry as hillshading and contours, it lets you add detail and interest to what is usually blue space on the map.</p><h2>World bathymetry vector tiles</h2><p>Our <a href="/news/2020/12/building-an-ocean-vector-map-with-maptiler/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">bathymetry blog post</a> created a lot of interest, so our team turned a global bathymetry dataset into vector tiles. This optimized Ocean tileset is now available in the <a href="https://cloud.maptiler.com/tiles/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Tiles section</a> of your MapTiler Cloud account.</p><p>MapTiler Ocean provides the maximum depth of the Ocean floor as a set of continuous (adjacent) polygons with no gaps or overlaps (the contour layer). Each polygon has a negative depth attribute, from -50m down to -12000m. These are discrete minimum depth values expressed in meters. The label and line colors can be changed to contrast with the ocean floor based on the depth in meters.</p><p>Finally, a global bathymetry terrain hillshade was also created and made available in the tiles section of your account. Called the <a href="https://cloud.maptiler.com/tiles/ocean-rgb/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">ocean-rgb layer</a>, it adds a truly mesmerizing look and feel to the undersea landforms and allows for further customization. The Cadastre dataset and Cadastre map <strong>cannot be used for any legal action</strong>, so we use the parcel ID to link to the official documentation. With this link, you can access information about who owns the land or buildings currently and historically.</p><p>MapTiler Cadastre can contain data for all the Swiss Cantons; however, only some are open data and available immediately. Let’s change that and make it look better! Here are a few simple steps to create bathymetry vector tiles with <a href="/engine/">MapTiler Engine</a> and map the ocean depths on <a href="/cloud/">MapTiler Cloud</a>.</p><h2>Creating bathymetry vector&nbsp;tiles</h2><p>Ocean depth data can be found on the bathymetry section of the NaturalEarth website. Global nested polygons are <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.naturalearthdata.com/downloads/10m-physical-vectors/10m-bathymetry/">downloaded</a> as individual shapefiles, each of them coming with a DEPTH attribute from 0 to -10000 meters.</p><figure class="media"><div data-oembed-url="https://www.youtube.com/embed/M675nN2EfxE?enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.maptiler.com"><div style="position: relative; padding-bottom: 100%; height: 0; padding-bottom: 56.2493%;"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/M675nN2EfxE" style="position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%; top: 0; left: 0;" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div></div></figure><p>Although this data can be processed as it is, we would rather merge all the shapefiles together first in QGIS, and dissolve polygons by depth. That allows to provide a single input data source to MapTiler Desktop and makes processing faster. A straightforward way to style it is to use a data expression for the <i>fill-color</i> property, which interpolates two color codes across the minimum and maximum DEPTH values. We may also define a color for every DEPTH value using a standard match expression, for full control on the rendered color palette.</p><p>The same bathymetry layer may be used in a <i>line</i> layer added on top, for highlighting the styled depths polygons.  A few simple steps to create bathymetry vector tiles for an ocean map.

<p>It’s been almost a decade since the Toner map style was created by Stamen Design, the famous San Francisco based design studio. Still used today by cartographers from around the world, we were inspired and made it ready for vector tiles.</p><h2>Black &amp; white high-contrast map&nbsp;style</h2><p><a href="/maps/#toner-v2//vector/11.55/-122.4163/37.7759">Toner</a> is all about simplicity and contrast. It uses black and white only and artfully inks the minimum amount of features onto the map. Special attention was then given to patterns, which are gathered in the map sprite and used to fill the wood, grass, building or cemeteries polygons. The Nunito and Noto font-families were finally used to modernize the map labels, resulting in rounder text with adjusted weights, sizes, letter spacing and halos.</p><h2>Endless colorful map variations</h2><p>These consecutive design steps through the layers groups allow you to easily create derivative maps. This update includes the ORTHO HR® aerial images available from Institut Géographique National (IGN) as open data. <p>The amazing <a href="https://2019.foss4g.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">FOSS4G</a> (Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial) international conference once again took place in late August, this time in Bucharest, Romania. The MapTiler Team was privileged to present news from the OpenMapTiles project as well as advanced open-data use cases there.</p><p>Many innovative topics were presented at FOSS4G, and we could learn a lot about the open-source projects we are using such as GDAL, PROJ, PostGIS, OpenLayers and many others, old or new. We also appreciated several presentations about vector tiles and could sense the ever-growing interest in them. We were also very proud to be part of the presenters, with the two following talks:</p><h2>OpenMapTiles: News, thematic layers, coordinate systems</h2><p>Our first presentation by Petr focused on the <a href="https://openmaptiles.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">OpenMapTiles project</a>. This set of tools allows anyone to convert global geospatial data into pre-generated vector tiles, e.g., creating a map from the OpenStreetMap database. This project is developed and maintained by the MapTiler team and released under the BSD 3-Clause and the CC-BY 4.0 open source licenses.</p><blockquote><p>See projects we built together with the amazing community at <a href="/opensource/">www.maptiler.com/opensource/</a>&nbsp;</p></blockquote><p>The latest updates from <a href="https://www.maptiler.com/blog/2019/06/openmaptiles-3-10-improving-water-layer.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">OpenMapTiles 3.10</a> were detailed, including new additions but also improvements provided to some layers such as boundaries, landuse or water. Peter also explained how it is now easy to create new thematic layers by extending the cartographic schema. One of the highlights was about processing and combining various open data sources in order to provide ready-to-use tilesets and maps, which we are serving at scale.</p><p>Several examples and map styles were shown, all based on the <a href="/maps/">MapTiler Maps API</a> which blends OpenStreetMap with Wikidata (for named places translations) and Natural Earth (for landcover on higher zoom levels). <p>Two new map styles, Pastel and Topographique, are available on MapTiler Cloud! Each has a unique use case and is ready for customization.&nbsp;</p><h2>Pastel</h2><p><a href="/maps/#pastel//vector/6/5.847/47.616" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Pastel</a> was created to provide a discreet basemap, on which one can easily overlay other datasets. It is based on a limited number of layers and a rather pale color palette, so the map stays simple yet deliciously ornamental and informative.<br><img src="https://media.maptiler.com/img/2019_06_10_new_pastel_and_topographique_map_styles_2_5e9cf7afd1.png" alt="2019-06-10-new-pastel-and-topographique-map-styles-2.png" srcset="https://media.maptiler.com/img/thumbnail_2019_06_10_new_pastel_and_topographique_map_styles_2_5e9cf7afd1.png 245w,https://media.maptiler.com/img/small_2019_06_10_new_pastel_and_topographique_map_styles_2_5e9cf7afd1.png 500w,https://media.maptiler.com/img/medium_2019_06_10_new_pastel_and_topographique_map_styles_2_5e9cf7afd1.png 750w,https://media.maptiler.com/img/large_2019_06_10_new_pastel_and_topographique_map_styles_2_5e9cf7afd1.png 1000w," sizes="100vw" width="1000px">The light atmosphere was accomplished by a grayish background and a water layer tinted with a soften baby blue. Landcover appears in variations of green whereas selected landuse areas are shown in beige (industrial), pale pink (hospital) or uranian blue (schools). You may also notice the house numbers showing up at higher zoom levels.</p><h2>Topographique</h2><p><a href="/maps/#topographique//vector/6/5.847/47.616">Topographique</a> is derived from our default Topo map style. It was designed with a focus on natural elements, using a palette of bright and distinct colors. Water and vegetation stand out with vivid blues and greens on top of a pure white background.
